BEA Systems CEO says pipeline reasonably healthy

BOSTON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - BEA Systems Inc. <BEAS.O> Chief
Executive Officer Alfred Chuang said on Thursday that the
company's pipeline so far this quarter is reasonably healthy.
The software company lowered its guidance for the year in
mid-August when it reported its earnings for the quarter ended
Aug. 31.
"What we're seeing in the first few weeks is things are
actually not going poorly. We're seeing our pipeline to be
reasonably healthy," Chuang said.
But he also noted that the quarter had just begun and that
the business also depends on how the economy develops.
Chuang made the comments on the same day International
Business Machines Corp. <IBM.N> announced it had won a
multimillion-dollar deal to sell its WebSphere application
server to eBay Inc. <EBAY.O> It was seen as a loss for BEA,
analysts said.
"IBM has successfully wooed eBay away from BEA with a major
contract win," James Moore, Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown analyst,
wrote in a research note. "We believe this announcement is a
mild negative for BEA given eBay was previously a showcase
reference customer."
Shares of BEA on Thursday fell $1.19, more than 8 percent,
to close at $13.27, a price not seen since November 1999.
Moore said IBM priced aggressively to win the deal.
"We would not be surprised to hear of additional customer
migrations over to WebSphere over the next few quarters," he
said.
Moore maintained a long-term buy rating on BEA, but said he
expected the competitive pressures from IBM to weigh on the
BEA's stock price.
