Completely inane, as if Benedictine monks perform artillery drills, or yeshiva students practice with small arms. Baptist preachers everywhere are teaching how to use rocket launchers......Right! Socialism assumed the mantle of religion and thus also acquired the killing skills.

IMHO, Communism and its cousin National Socialism, used mass murder as a means of securing power, keeping power, and removing potential rivals / potential threats. It was probably considered by them as just another tool of politics. I believe that the "cult of personality" occurred once most outside political opposition was crushed. State murder was then turned inward (into the ruling party itself) and to the population in general. It became a survival skill one needed to develop, to keep from being culled from the herd.
