Providian Warns About Earnings
By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Providian Financial Corp.'s shares plunged 22 percent Tuesday after the credit card giant warned that a slowdown in consumer spending will crimp its earnings growth for the rest of this year, and next year too.

The San Francisco-based company, the nation's fifth-largest issuer of Mastercards and Visa credit cards, said its earnings this year will range from $3.20 to $3.25 per share, down from the consensus estimate of $3.28 per share among analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call.
