Hello all,

Wow! This thread is really quiet lately!

In doing more research in this area, I came across a couple of interesting events that are showing the state of the industry ... make it mean what you like ...

First, I have been talking with Inviso (http://www.inviso.com) for quite some time now. For those of you following the press releases, Xybernaut made an announcement with Inviso and another partner for Inviso's goggles to be used with Xybernaut products. The estimated release date (from Inviso) of the first commercial units was going to be this month ... however market conditions have postponed the availability. I'm now being told that we might see them at the beginning of the year ... and this is a *big* loss to the wearable / mobile market. These goggles are the first of a new generation of technology which is dropping the form-factor and price of "head-mounted displays", in 800x600 pixel resolutions, from the $3000 price range to ~$500! I was really looking forward to getting my pair ... but I'll have to wait for now ...

The second point is the status of Xybernaut competition. I have been working with both Xybernaut and ViA wearable computers for a couple of years. I was very impressed by the ViA units, and was waiting for their next generation product to ship ... and now it might never arrive. Although the ViA web site is alive (http://www.via-pc.com) it appears that the company might be long gone! Give a call to their headquarters and you'll get no answer ... and the other day I even got a message that the voice mail box was full! On their main corporate phone number!

So Xybernaut might have just lost a major competitor ... which is good and bad depending on your viewpoints. It really give Xybernaut some room ... and might also indicate a tough market to crack ...

I think these are both indicators of the current state of the market ... not of wearable computers in general. IMHO ;-)

Scott,
An associate of mine called Compaq about getting a few of the "new" iPaq's that were supposed to be released recently. They didn't know what he was talking about so he called HP to find out about the new Jornada 560 series. The HP rep told him that they probably won't stay with the iPaq platform because HP's is better.
Doesn't XYBR already have a relationship with HP, at least in Europe?

As for Hitachi, weren't the terms of XYBR selling the WIA somewhat restrictive regarding support to others who may want to license the technology? My memory is not real clear on this. Maybe someone else is.
