As governments become increasingly socialist, free trade is just a label for managed trade. Protectionism has its own logic as all the companies in a socialist paradise are prohibited from doing anything that is not required, and required to do everything that is not prohibited. The resulting lapdog companies have neither an interest nor an ability to compete in a truly free market.
