The cost of deploying last mile solutions widely enough for them to have succeeded is probably beyond anyone's imagination. But telecom had that deployment priced in! It's vastly more costly to get last mile bandwidth to everyone than it was to upgrade all those obsolete desktop PCs for Y2K.

I agree that the telecom players had already counted on exponential growth in last mile access. I think that the key problem with the last mile has always been the necessity of the truck roll to install the equipment. DSL/Cable/Fixed Wireless are just too complex to provide a good ROI for the carriers. I am hoping that this will be the key differentiator for HDR....the ability for a consumer to walk into Best Buy and be able to access the net within an hour. This will dramatically change the business models for providers....
