we have some control over the situation
I'm not sure we have control over the situation. I like to think we do. Our free will, if any, is certainly bounded. I may choose to eat peas but I may not be able to choose to like eating peas. Addictions, habits, and general personality are indications of differing degrees of resistance to complete free will.

The major point here is that the inability to control the situation is inherient in information flow, and not in the special abilities or willpower of some entity.
