BERLIN (Reuters) - The euro got the thumbs down from the German criminal fraternity when robbers ignored wads of euro notes in an armoured van and stole five to six million marks (1.5 million to two million pounds) instead.

Police in Hesse state said the driver of the Securicor van and an unknown accomplice overpowered the co-driver and loaded the Deutschmarks into a car on Thursday.

"Euro bank notes were left in the van," a spokesman said.

The design of euro notes has been criticised as bland and opinion polls show many Europeans would prefer to keep their national currencies.

Euro cash becomes legal tender on January 1 across the euro zone.
