NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The stock market is set for another volatile day Thursday, with the futures markets signaling an open on the downside.

The September S&P 500 contract gave up 7.60 points, or 0.6 percent, and was trading about 7.30 points below fair value, according to HL Camp & Co. Nasdaq futures lost 16.00 points, or 1.1 percent.

Among shares trading before the official opening bell, Yahoo (YHOO) gained 20 cents to $10.84 in European action after Lehman Brothers' Holly Becker said the stock was a "compelling buying opportunity."

Investors will be focused on the chip group with bellwether Intel (INTC) set to give its midquarter update after the close. Shares shed 37 cents to $27.10 in the pre-market.

In the Treasury market, prices gained some traction across the board.

The 10-year Treasury note was up 2/32 to yield ($TNX) 4.945 percent while the 30-year government bond added 1/8 to yield ($TYX) 5.47 percent.

Thursday will see the release of weekly initial claims and the August non-manufacturing index. Check economic calendar and forecasts.

In the currency sector, the dollar put on 0.5 percent to 121.23 yen while the euro edged down 0.1 percent to 88.49 cents.
