I think the lack of goodwill writeoff is part of the reason no one has stepped in to buy many of the good tech's at a premium as they have done in the past. However, now that trough valuations are present in the market, there are going to be a lot of good opportunities

Do you think Cisco will now make acquisition in cash?
Recently Cisco bought Allergo for $ 400 million (in stock).
Acquisitions (and then Goodwill writeoff) was one way for a Company to keep delivering next generation products. I think it was one source of innovation that is being put to rest for being used in an abusive way. But you just don't kill innovation, rather modify the A/C rules to benefit society.
