To date, IBM has not demostrated a desire to engage in a direct price comparison between their IA platforms and their RISC-based platforms. They have tried to maintain a price premium for their RISC platforms - which they have been able to do quite nicely as those customers tend to be more bound by previous software OS choices and substitution between architectures is difficult.

Exactly. The prices of all the current UNIX platforms has NOTHING to do with what it costs the OEM to produce them. They have much more to do with what it would cost the customer to move OFF the platform. But, I see no cost advantage of say an H.P. 8 way Itanium server over a similarly configured 8 way Power4 server. Especially if Intel will charge $2K-$3K per processor. Do you?? It seems to me it's just a matter of whether IBM wants to compete on a price basis. If they can still derive a lot of profits from the associated software and services, they certainly will.
