Paul, IMO, the US has to decide what kind of economy it wants. Then it can value the dollar accordingly, that is if the US trading partners will allow her to do it.

The strong dollar makes foreign investment attractive and imports cheap. And, it's cheap imports that keep the consumers happy. And, every day I hear on CNBC that the boom(?!) was consumer driven.

Of course, as you say, if the dollar is strong then the exports are hit and there's widespread retrenchment in export-driven industries.

So, either the consumers and the retailers are happy or the manufacturers and the workers --- can't be both!
