Re Diesel demand: Cumulative consumption ytd is up 7% over last year. Last week's consumption up 1.8% over last year. What's up with that? I thought trucking was supposed to go down in a recession. How much would these numbers be up if the economy was good?

Two ideas:

Numbers are BS and EIA will revise them down in a few months time.

Truckers are stepping on the gas in order to keep their earnings up in a down economy, and also to keep up with the general increase in highway speeds.

Any thoughts?

In this morning's (local) paper there was a story about a very large new generating plant that will perch where one of Williams Co.'s gas lines runs through the countryside. If this is typical of what's going on all around the country, a firm market for natural gas seems only a matter of time. All these new wells can't keep producing at the current rates.
