Mathematically, this is getting to be a bear of a bear market. Janet Brown, president of DAL Investment in San Francisco says that this bear market is already three months older than the average bear market since World War II and close to the average 30 percent decline.

``It's really frightening,'' said Brown, who manages $500 million in mutual funds. ``But I do think we're getting close to the bottom.''
