But that is my point exactly! Chaotic systems may be unpredictable, and the definition of unpredictable pretty much amounts to whether the cyclic pattern is too long to fit into the memory of the predictor. 2^16 may not seem like much of a cycle to a computer while it is quite a feat for a human to remember.

A Chaotic system may be random, but it doesn't have to be. It is not necessary to be completely random for a system to be chaotic and of an order of complexity that puts it out of reach of predictability. Such a system is completely deterministic as you have pointed out. If there is any random component in a chaotic system, no matter how tiny, the effect will be magnified by the chaos. A dripping faucet will contain random compenents, a computer model of the weather will not (without special truly random pattern generators).
