Ah, you are a visionary! Agree VOD is coming, and in the next few years. The decision by the 5 studios last week to offer movie downloads over the internet indicates you have correctly predicted an intended use of technology. Have been buying optical companies lately, companies nobody wants now. In fact I look to various threads to see what everyone is "poo-pooing". Read an article the other day which discussed the future of optical networking and who the big winners of the next cycle would be. Was comforted by the fact that I recently acquired large positions in every company the author mentioned. It may be stupid to be buying now, or at least it looks that way now. We'll see how stupid it was in 2-3 years. I wonder if Blockbuster is a good short here?

I think Craig Barrett of Intel made a comment to a panel of CEO that that we had thousands of miles of Gigabit fiber but everyone still had 56k dial-up from the home. There is a big barrier with the phone compnaies / ILECs / RBOCs . Either they will roll stuff out on their own schedules, or be forced by politics, or evetually bypassed by wireless and/ or direct fiber laid by local governments. Cable might help, but needs a lot of work. Satellite may help a little in rural areas. The phone companies are the biggest single barrier to the next tech boom, and they are moving real slow.
