Nextel affirms third-quarter outlook
RESTON, Va., Sept 7 (Reuters) - Nextel Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:NXTL - news), the nation's fifth-largest wireless telephone operator, said on Friday domestic subscriber additions and operating cash flow for the third quarter are on track to exceed second-quarter results.

Reston, Virginia-based Reston said it expects to add more than 500,000 subscribers in the third quarter and has activated its 8 millionth domestic digital subscriber.

The company also said it is installing new software from Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) that will enable Nextel to provide significantly greater calling capacity in high traffic areas.

On Thursday, credit rating agency Standard & Poor's revised Nextel's outlook to negative from stable while reaffirming its single-B senior unsecured debt rating.

Shares of Nextel closed at $10.04 on Nasdaq on Thursday.
