I am confused by this statement, however.

I do not see competition between religion and science in accounting for natural phenomenon.

I do see competition between some groups to explain the phenomenon. For example: Solon and Mars seem to be in competition against "believers" on this thread. The competition is based in science and philosophy/theology to: from one point of view, offer a philosophical explanation for the meaning of the universe that would dispel religious claims with "science" as the only basis for evaluation; while, from the other, point of view the claim that there is no breach between science (as you defined it) and religion; that infact, the two are complimentary not competitive.
