Hong Kong, Sept. 7 (BridgeNews) - Major Chinese copper cable producers are believed to have received large orders from the government for the planned reform of power networks in farming villages nationwide, trading sources in Shanghai said Friday. The orders will consume a total of about 700,000 tonnes of copper in the period of July 2001-June 2002, and are expected to lift China's copper import demand in the next few months.

>> A nice thread to have here! <<

thanks! i look forward to any contributions from you, especially sharing of your expertise on silver/gold.

>> May I ask what are your 5 favorite commodities? <<

well i still have lots to learn so unfortunately i am somewhat limited in the answers i can give you. it kind of depends on whether or not you are talking futures or commodity related stocks. if you're talking stocks, i like stocks such as teck cominco, breakwater, apex silver, pan american, noranda, pasminco, M.I.M, etc. because by owning these small players i can get a decent amount of leverage and get a lot of exposure to zinc and lead, plus other metals such as silver, gold, copper, and even some coal. it's just a matter of timing my entry point. if i wanted safer bets i would play larger stocks like rio tinto, bhp, wmc, etc.

i can say that lead and zinc are my two favorite metals to look for a bottom in. coffee and cotton look interesting to me as well but i'm no futures expert so i need to do some more work before plunging in. i wish i knew more about the grains and the meats and the softs, etc. but for now i just don't think i know enough to make an informed opinion. rubber is one i should learn more about. i don't share people's enthusiasm for copper and gold right now, i think it's not time to jump in yet. of course i expect most all the metals to perform well a few years out, but some will do better than others.

i am bullish on energy for the rest of the decade and i think coal stocks will benefit. i also think oil and ng are going to trend higher as well.

i am bearish on paper assets such as stocks and bonds over the next decade. i am longer-term bearish on the dollar and i think interest rates are going much higher in the coming years. i think these factors are bullish for commodities and hard assets. the whole purpose of this thread is to learn and figure out which commodities are going to be the best plays in the next couple years, i don't claim to know which ones right now.

one more thing. my target for an acceleration in the prices of commodities is somewhere around 2003-2004. that doesn't mean i will wait until 2003 to buy them, i expect them to bottom long before that. but it should be readily apparent that a new bull market for commodities is in place and the gains should begin to accelerate by then.
