IDC on Friday cut its forecast for PC industry unit and revenue growth for 2001 and 2002, leading to declines in both revenues and units for 2001 and revenues for 2002, primarily reflecting weakness in all regions. The researcher said that for 2001, worldwide unit shipments would be about 130 million units, a decline of 1.6 percent. IDC had previously predicted a 5.8 percent rise in shipments. The revised report comes after IDC in June slashed its 2001 outlook for growth to 10.3 percent over last year. In terms of revenues, IDC now projects a 10.8 percent drop, reflecting both reduced sales and lower prices as U.S. PC makers wage war, in an effort to grab market share. IDC lowered its expectation for unit growth in the U.S. to a decline of 13 percent, greater than the previously anticipated decline of 6.3 percent. For 2002, IDC reduced its global unit forecast to 138.6 million, and cut its 2002 unit growth outlook to 6.9 percent from 12.2 percent. For 2002 revenues, IDC now sees a 2 percent decline, instead of 2 percent growth. The PC market has been pressured by competition due to weak demand and a price war initiated by Dell Computer Corp.(NasdaqNM:DELL - news) Rival Gateway Inc.(NYSE:GTW - news) in August said that it would pull out of Asia and Europe and focus its operations in the U.S. Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) announced its plan to buy Compaq Computer Corp.(NYSE:CPQ - news), a deal that creates a rival to International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) and easily outstrips Dell as the No. 1 personal computer maker.
