Fenwick & West Law Firm Fires 10% of Lawyers, Citing Economy 09/07 19:53
By Vivien Lou Chen

Palo Alto, California, Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Fenwick & West, a law firm that represents Cisco Systems Inc. and Veritas Software Corp., said it has fired more than 10 percent of its attorneys because of the slowing economy.

The firm, which has offices in Palo Alto, San Francisco and Washington, dismissed 32 of its 301 lawyers on Thursday, said Chairman Gordon Davidson. All were associates in the firm's corporate practice, he added.

A drop in client spending and lack of new initial public offerings has led to a decline in demand for Fenwick & West's services, Davidson said. Fenwick & West represented EBay Inc. in its initial public offering in 1998 and has clients that include Electronic Arts Inc., Exodus Communications Inc., Intuit Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc.

About half of the 49 new lawyers hired to start at Fenwick & West this fall have been offered an average of six months in pay if they choose not to join the firm, he said.
