Dear Steve: Well, because of our vast safety nets today I dont think a 1% increase in the unemployment rate would significantly alter consumer spending, especially for the basic necessities. However, consumer PERCEPTIONS of the future could have very serious effect. Ie if one has to worry about their employment one tends to become very conservative spending wise. So, if people perceive the situation is going to only worsen, yes, we could have more problems. Personally, now that wholesale inventories are getting very low I have a feeling we may have seen the bottom so far as economic report cards are concerned and am very hopeful that things will only improve from here quarter over quarter.
