I heard from someone else that IBM has been quietly laying people off for a few months

Paul. FWIW, a couple weeks ago in our Minneapolis paper, there was a small blurb in the lower part of the business section about IBM laying off several hundred from their operations in Rochester, MN (not sure what part of the business). I remember being surprised that it wasn't bigger news around here, but it anecdotally supports what you've been hearing.

it's almost like they're getting people ready

Paul, believe me, I'm ready! <g>

Seriously, I hear what you're saying. Earlie predicted a few weeks ago over on the mother-thread that Lou would finally have to warn this quarter, and what you're hearing ties in nicely with that.
