JJ, Re: "I agree in some ways. However, IMHO the potential for being banned helps clean up at least some posters' acts enough that I can actually see their opinion rather than just sending them to my ignore list. I think that anyone who thinks the ban capability of this thread exists to oppress opinions has it completely backwards. Without banning, some would be so crude/rude/uncivilized that I would immediately ignore them, missing out on their opinion entirely. Its not perfect, but it is a good attempt at a civilized open forum."

Just realize that the next petition to ban Paul would be on a permanent basis. So instead of you missing out on his opinions due to you having him on ignore, then everybody will be missing out on his opinion. I think that the people that want to ban people here are making it personal, rather than for the good of the thread. I would understand if someone had the opinion that you do, and genuinely thinks that corrective punishment would bring out the best in people, but others are simply not having the same romantic ideals. They are only being selfish, and that's why I would call them "jerks".
