What Is She Thinking?

On 1/1/01 Abby Joseph Cohen of Goldman Sachs predicted a year end target for SPX of 1650. On 9/6/01 (last Thursday) she revised it to 1500.

This will require a 38% increase in the index between now and December 31, if Friday's lows hold. This year to date SPX is down 18%.

It can be noted that in 1998, after falling to 971 on 10/2 (A number which appears to be the next major support point on weekly charts) from the high on 7/13 of 1164, it did manage to increase 27% to close the year at 1241. In many ways however the situation at the end of 1998 was materially different than it is now. It should also be noted that the fall from the July high to the October low obviously took less time than remains in this year.

The SPX March '02 1500 calls closed Friday at .65 (Bid .20, Ask .65). The SPX March '02 950 Puts closed Friday at 28.00 and the SPX March '02 1075's closed at 64.50.
