The nice thing about the waltz is that it can be enjoyed over such a wide range -- as a very proper, formal dance with your grandmother, and as an extraordinarily erotic dance with the right partner for that. I don't know of any other dance that has such an extraordinary range. There aren't very many Latin dances I think I would enjoy dancing with my grandmother. But one of the best waltz partners I had when I was a very young man was a matriarch of at least 70, who most of the young men avoided like the plague because she was old, very formal, very opinionated about dancing, and not shy about telling bad dancers that they weren't very good. But my oh my, could she waltz! I loved dancing with her -- I could lead her in anything with the lightest touch of my and on her waist and she would follow every move with absolute grace and beauty.
