it's off topic, but i guess that's ok.

the choice by at&t to go north american tdma (that is, not gsm tdma) was nothing but a get-to-market faster timing call. cdma was not ready for deployment at the time, and at&t was able to expand its capacity with the tdma digital technology earlier. as i recall with this decision at&t was able to get digital in us customers' hands about six to twelve months earlier than the cdma providers.

all the above has nothing to do with 3G. just some market history.

Re: Cell Phone - get copy of Forbes with Cell phone on the cover. No really best national carrier, can only pick best for your area - some details inside, probably more at Forbes web site.

I have a dual CDMA /analog very big QCOM candy bar - works good, but a pain to drag around.

CDMA quality gets rolled down between 3:30 pm and 6:30pm in SIlicon Valley. You can hear the vocoder effects (fewer bits) and the phone starts to clip the ends of words. Helps make money for Sprint.

When it's good, you get better audio quality on CDMA - very useful if you are selling by phone, having emotional conversations with people, or dealing with non-native accents or inflections.
