I've been thinking about Internet II for some time, but I always come back to who will be making MONEY. The advertising model will not work, imo. I'm still waiting to see how the wealth of "opportunties" translates into profitability. I consider myself to be above average of the Inet in my utilization. By that I mean "I actually buy stuff" <vbg> As an example, yesterday I went to PetsMart.com looking for a particular product. Not to buy online, just to check and see if it was in their inventory to save a wasted trip and a phone call. They had the product so I stopped by the local store and picked it up. So yes, in a very direct way the Internet "got the sale" for Petsmart, but so would have a phone call. Right now I'm seeing the Internet more as a communication "device" than a new form of commerce any more than the mail order catalogue in it's day. There has always been a niche for that. And the Internet has certainly expanded the spectrum of goods and services to buy. But when you say "broadband for the masses", the question that necessarily arises....to what purpose? Music distribution? Yes. I'd pay for that. Movies? That too. But I honestly don't see the type of "improvement" for version II that would cause a significant acceleration of demand in other areas of commerce, at least for the average consumer. And the danger is that as the Internet becomes pervasive, more and more people will "expect" it as just another part of customer service, and "expect" it to be free. Indeed the question is WHAT is the killer app to drive the new found optimism. What will make consumer actually pull out their wallet for whatever the Inet is selling, that they can't already buy through other established sources. And I really do hope I am wrong about this.
