i mean that at&t made the decision for north american tdma (it had the key word digital associated with it), because north american tdma was already deployed and most important was ready to go. the cdma of that time was not ready yet. it was a market timing decision, and not so much a technology decision. as i wrote before, this na tdma decsion by at&t let them get voice product in customers' hands about six to twelve months earlier than the cdma of that era.

the usa is a quilt of cell technologies. voice stream uses gsm/amps. at&t uses na tdma/amps. sprint uses cdma/amps. verizon uses i don't even know anymore. by the way whatever happened to pcs primeco? primeco was cdma, but someone must have mercifully acquired them.

3G is a different matter, because all these service providers are going to have to replace a lot of infrastructure to get it up and running. that means they are going to need to spend a lot of money, and we all know they don't have the money to spend now. so unless the wireless guys who are going to make the 3G infrastructure are willing to loan it to the service providers until they can pay some cash flow for it, the rollout will be slow.

i have not stayed in touch with japan's ntt "3G" deployment (which i think should be termed 2.5 G (or some decimal of 2)), but after some delay it is supposed to rollout october 1. let's see what that stuff does.

the short answer. i think verizon claims to be the largest cellular provider in the usa, and when i checked their website i see they have amps, cdma, and (what verizon calls) pcs digital (most likely pcs digital is north american tdma). at&t wireless has got to be right up there on size too.
