You use html. Trouble is, I realized that to type the symbols here makes them operate.

You enclose the letter b between carats to start bold, and then slash b (/b) between carats to stop it.

Michael was partly right in his answer, but he showed the "off" command without the "on"

There's probably a basic html style sheet if you look for one on hotbot. You can probably make colored text, even blinking text, if you want to, and all sorts of fonts. And even paste in pictures. Doesn't seem worth while to make every answer into a web page, though!
