I think I found the perfect job. Anti-hacker for an on-line casine on some island. Great challenge, easily justifable high salary and a great location. Not to mention that the casinos and the local governments would probably encourage a bit of retribution against the hackers.

Wonder if they hackers were "working" for the Las Vegas Casinos.... :)

Here's the thing about security (any kind) - there's nothing 100% safe in this world - nothing. What makes something more secure than another thing is how it is protected. In most cases, its not just about bars, alarms, sensors and cameras - its also about RESPONSE. Here's the best example I can think of:

A bank is protected by video survellience cameras, sensors, vaults and walls. With only this level of protection, anyone could break in given enough time. This is basically what we have today in the computer industry. We have firewalls, passwords, VPNs etc that offer some resistance to the casual observation of data. Given enough time, any technology can be overcome.

In the real world, when you break into a bank and start drilling into the vault door, the police come and arrest you. Then you go to jail for usually a fairly LONG period of time (deterent). In the computer industry, there's not much of the "police" coming down and arresting you and/or long jail terms. So basically there's no consequence to the actions of hackers.

Until that changes, don't expect things to change :)

Just a few thoughts,
