The "world", in the sense of the pricewatch proxy for the open market, seems content to pay Intel $171 for a 1ghz Piii, and $149 for a 933mhz part, as opposed to $181, $160, and $125 for 1.7, 1.6, 1.5 ghz P4's. The "world" seems content to pay Intell pretty well for Piii parts. Which do you think Intel makes more money on, given the relative die sizes? And what part is Intel pulling the plug on? It all looks pretty darn inscrutable to me. Postmodern economics, marchitecture, or monopolistic practices? You can pick. Maybe Intel has to kill the Piii so they can make $30 chipset parts on those lines, that makes as much sense as any of it.
