Intel says sees no change in communications market
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), the No. 1 semiconductor maker, on Monday said it sees no change in its view on how business is faring in the troubled telecommunications industry.

``There is no change in our view on current market conditions,'' Sean Maloney, who heads Intel's communications business, told investors at the Lehman Brothers Semiconductor and Computer Systems Conference here.

Intel, whose microprocessors are found in 80 percent of the world's personal computers, has been making an aggressive push in the last several years to move into new markets as the PC market shows signs of maturing in industrialized nations.

Maloney said Santa Clara, California-based Intel has spent $10 billion in the last few years on acquisitions to bulk up its nascent communications business, which has a Fi???more than $1 billion.

While Intel does make computer-networking equipment targeted at small- and ???ses, it is also making an aggressive push into designing, building and selling processors and other microchips tar??? market has all but stalled since the heady days of the late 1990s as service providers and others spent too much to expand their networks and as global economies slowed, particularly in the United States.

>> A year from now Intel's traditional growth pattern will have kicked in, and the market pessimism will be history. <<

I tend to agree with the concept, though I think the timing may take 1.5 - 2 years, not just one.

However, the downside to that scenario is that when people realize that the "traditional growth pattern" has resumed, they are more than likely to resume paying the "traditional" PE for the stock. And that leaves some room for its price to fall further.

Nonetheless, I think it does put a definite "low end" value on the stock, which is more than I can say for many other tech companies, and is one reason I'm interested again for the first time in a couple of years. Not biting yet, but watching closely. I'd like to see the market internalize a few more forecasts like the recent IDC one before I bite.
