Your answer seems to be "marchitecture", which is as good an answer as any. Intel's share used to be somewhat more than 75%. Yes, the Piii is being phased out, the question is, why? There's still demand for the part, and Intel by all indications ought to make a better profit on a $150 Piii than a $150 P4. The phase-out doesn't seem to have anything particular to do with rational economics or business practice, more like flogging big, inefficient cars with tail fins.
