This was just a start in 15 mins tonight.

There are many improvements that can be made:

1) We can have current PE as well as forward PE values
2) We can try to come up with our own sensible forward earnings figures rather than using the analyst figures
3) We can use Price/Sales as well as PE. This would be especially helpful to work out how stocks with negative earnings fit in.
4) And as you say, we can look at historical values for forward PE in a bear.

I haven't collected the figures for these four points but I am sure I can. Question is - do I have time? So any help would be appreciated.

If we can make accurate earnings estimates, then we come up with an idea of what the historical PE will be a year from now. Of course, some predictions may be way out, but we must have a target so let's make the target as accurate as we can.
