Nikkei climbd on Nasdaq's rise, yen

TOKYO (CBS.MW) - Tokyo stocks opened higher in cautious trade Tuesday as a rebound in the Nasdaq overnight encouraged investors to go bargain hunting after the Nikkei sank to a fresh 17-year low the previous day.

In early morning trade, the Nikkei Average was up 139.03 points, or 1.36 percent, at 10,334.72. On Monday, the index tumbled 3.05 percent to end at 10,195.69 - a level not seen since August 1984.

The broader Topix added 0.54 percent to 1,061.70.

In New York overnight, the Nasdaq added 0.46 percent, while the Dow finished almost flat, off 0.34 percent.

Tokyo markets also were supported by a weakness in the yen, as that boosts exporters' overseas revenues when exchanged into the Japanese currency.

The dollar was quoted at 121.13 yen in early morning trade in Tokyo, up from 121.00 yen in New York late Monday. It changed hands at 120.07 yen late Monday in Tokyo.

Australia's All Ordinaries Index was trading up 0.26 percent at 3,191.70 in early morning. South Korea's Kospi erased earlier gains and shed 0.25 percent to 549.33 points early in the morning session.
