"On the subject of US profits, it is interesting to consider recent research done on the level of US earnings in the past 10 years with adjustments made for non-recurring items, stock options and pension plans. This was performed by US investment house Sanford Bernstein & Co and shows that once these adjustments were made, the 'exceptional performance of profit margins in the second-half of the 1990s disappears entirely'. Bernstein concludes that there was no growth at all in US earnings per share from 1995 to 2001, a conclusion that makes a mockery of the productivity growth miracle that Greenspan & Co were trying so hard to nurture over the same period."
