Oh give me a break with that tired anecdote. The fact that Syria possessed such strong artillery forces looking right down into Galilee is provocation enough.

But if you believe that driving a farm tractor into a demilitarized zone warrants a military response on the part of the Syrians, then possibly their possessing such a hair trigger for such small infractions was the problem.

But you can also cite the MAIN REASON that Israel felt threatened by the Syrians, if not militarily, then economically. The Golan Heights are the source of some 30% of Israel's water supply and the Syrians were developing plans to divert this water to deny it to the Israelis. (what's "amusing" is that now the Turks, Israel's allies, are doing to same to Syria).

So just like in the old west when your neighbors try to put up a dam and deny you the water you need to survive, you take what you need.

Water is probably the most vital resource in the mid-east... and it's VERY easy to see why Israel could perceive the denial of it to their people as a powerful threat.

Read the history of Eli Cohen, an Israeli spy tasked with gathering information on Syria's attempts to divert water from the Jordan.

So Thomas M.. Tell us how you would react if your neighbor was about to turn off your water pressure by 30%...

Would you go over and "kick his @ss"?? I would...

Especially when I had been spending years trying to get him to sigh on to a regional water resource plan that would have benefitted the entire neighborhood.
