Trickle of Good News May Lift Stocks

Caleb's Commentary: Beware of Overly Optimistic CEOs -

By Denise Duclaux

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks are expected to tick higher at the open on Tuesday after a handful of companies like drug giant Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE - news) and ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co. (NYSE:HNZ - news) stood by their financial targets and offered a bit of solace to investors shaken by the economic downturn.

A tepid rise in the broad market on Monday further encouraged investors hungry for hints that the stock market and the nation's economy are scraping the bottom after a long and painful fall.

``Certainly people were fearful that Monday was going to be an awful day and having averted that I think we will open a bit firmer,'' said Larry Wachtel, a market analyst at Prudential Securities.

He warned, however, that skepticism still reigned.

``If there is any kind of firming there will probably be a sell into strength,'' Wachtel said. ``These days every session is going to be contested. So no matter how you open you don't know how you will close -- it's an adventure hour by hour.''
