Arafat condemns plane attacks
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has condemned the aircraft attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and on the Pentagon and other targets in Washington.

"I send my condolences, the condolences of the Palestinian people to American President [George W] Bush and his government and to the American people for this terrible act," Mr Arafat told reporters in Gaza.

"We completely condemn this serious operation...We were completely shocked. It's unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable."

An anonymous caller told Abu Dhabi television earlier today that a radical Palestinian group was responsible for the attacks, but the group later denied any involvement.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said it had no connection with the series of attacks.

Maher Taher, a spokesman for the radical Damascus-based group, says the PFLP "has nothing to do with these explosions."

On August 27, following the assassination of PFLP chief Abu Ali Mustapha in an Israeli missile attack on the West Bank, Taher called on Arabs to "strike American interests".

Palestinians have been waging an uprising against Israeli occupation since last September.
