At this point I know that even though I can't see them I still have not accepted the fact that they are no longer there. Similarly I don't think that anyone fully understands either the direct or indirect impact that these events will have on our lives. In New York they are directing everyone except for emergency support personnel to move north of Canal Street. This is as much to facilitate the flow of emergency vehicles in and out of the area. My understanding is that the overwhelming majority of the people who have been killed or injured were in, or fairly close to the Towers. Unfortunately, many people who do not work in the building, but work in the financial district come through a major transportation hub that is directly below the Towers. People who were not within, passing through, or very close to the towers have been spared, at least physically. There are many real heroes among the rescue workers who entered the building after the initial plane crashes but before the buildings collapsed. The financial district is very dense. The two World Trade Towers are part of a larger complex of buildings including corporate headquarters, law firms and investment banks. The NYSE is a few blocks away. There are increasing reports of collateral damage to buildings close to the towers, as well as to the below ground utilities, including gas mains and telecommunication lines resulting from the collapse of the buildings. You would probably not be incorrect if you assumed that almost everything currently being communicated through the media at this time is very incomplete and inaccurate. There are number of reason for this. The difficulty that news organizations have in getting information is only one of these. More significantly though the release of all information being managed and controlled. This effort involves both the withholding of information as well as the release of intentionally misleading information. Another reason for this is ensure that the public response remains controlled. In addition, it is not in the interest of the various intelligence and law enforcement officials involved with responding to this threat what they in fact do and do not know at this time. This effort involves various activities specifically designed to obscure the extent that they may or may not know what is going on. I think it must be assumed that some of the evacuations and threats being identified to the public are such misinformation. I mention this because there has been and will continue to be all sorts of rumors and conjectures put forward in most venues, including this thread. I would encourage everyone to take everything they read or hear with more than a grain of salt. Unfortunately this event is both much worse than anyone at this time is willing to acknowledge, and yet will do very little, if anything, to motivate the elimination of the root cause of events like this, which is our unwillingness to understand the purpose, value, and sanctity of all life. Clearly we must take those actions that are necessary to ensure that those responsible for this ever do it again. And I know it is much easier for me to say what I am going to say because today was not one of the almost weekly times that my wife goes through or into those towers. But no matter how righteous we are in our indignation, and no matter how much of a wrong was done to us, to the extent that we respond to this out of anger and vengeance we will do nothing that will actually prevent an act like this from occurring again.
