It's beyond bearing.

"...Muhammad looked at me with a crooked face and asked if I told his mom that he'd gone to the clashes. I shook my head no. He shifted closer and whispered that he'd once stolen a shekel from the shop's till, so that he could take a cab to Karni crossing. I said that his mom would be very upset, and he said that he knew.

''Are you sure,'' I asked, ''that you want to be a martyr?''

''Yes,'' he said. ''I want to be a martyr.''

''Do you know what that means?''

''Throwing stones and Molotovs.''

''No,'' I said, curious. ''That's not what it means. It means dying.''

''I'll take a bullet in the leg,'' he said.

''That doesn't make you a martyr. You would have to take one in the head.''

''My brother was shot in the head.''

''To be a martyr,'' I said, ''it has to go all the way through. Are you sure you want to be a martyr?''

''No,'' said Muhammad. ''I want to be an architect.'' "
