DJ, this being the Doom and Gloom thread, I suppose it's not too early to consider the financial repercussions.

First: World trade will be severely impacted by the loss of the people and the two towers.

Second: Oil. Haven't looked at prices, but no doubt they are skyrocketing in response to perceived new tumult in Middle East.

Third: Lots of property destruction (several jetliners, Pentagon and WTC) and loss of life, particularly on presumably well-insured wealthy NYC residents, means that insurers are taking a huge hit.

Fourth: Effect on securities markets will no doubt be negative. To what extent? Who knows, but it won't be pretty.

Fifth: Price of gold probably will go straight up, though I haven't checked.

Sixth: Effect on US budget unknown, but surely significant.
