People on the mainland have not had to deal with a disruption of this magnitude for about 140 years (i.e. the Civil War). Perhaps it is the fear of the unknown. I generally have my 3 jugs full of water for earthquake or other disaster at all times; I emptied the jugs into the kiddie pool recently so that I could clean the jugs & refill, so it's just a good idea to me since we are still in earthquake country.
