NBC reported that Morgan Stanley leased 50 stories in the WTC. This whole thing is astonishing...a thing I could not have even imagined. Tom Clancyesque...didn't he write a book about a Japanese pilot who crashed his plane into the U.S. Capitol?

There is an unconfirmed report that the American Express building in Manhattan is burning and in danger of collapse.

There are supposedly two buildings that are burning: #5 and #7 World Trade Center. Apparently there was structural damage as a result of the WTC collapse and at this point (according to the local news coverage), they expect these two buildings to collapse as well. No rescue workers are allowed in the area.

Also, re: the rescue effort at the WTC site, there is so much smoke that it's hindering the search and rescue attempts. The hospitals have received relatively few victims so far as a result of the delays in actually getting to the site.

The WTC was constructed with asbestos, so there has been concern expressed in news reports regarding asbestos exposure in southern Manhattan.

One observation I must make: it's almost surreal here in Manhattan. Outside of the southern tip of the island, you would never know that anything happened. People are outside strolling about. It's pretty bizarre. You have what looks like a virtual war zone at the southern tip of Manhattan, and just blocks away, life goes on as usual.

Let's hope the rescue workers are able to get to the survivors quickly.
