My understanding is that many were able to escape, but that all but a few of the bottom floors (perhaps 10-15) are gone.

The casualties were undoubtedly horrendous.

Yes, people were able to evacuate. One I saw on TV was on the 82nd floor of the second tower. Also saw an interview with a rescue worker who was at the bottom, in one building when it started to collapse...said he couldn't believe he got out and away fast enough.
