I have read (and heard in person from Europeans and others) that they think that all the world stock markets are being held up by "Wall Street"--the entirety of financial institutions subsumed in that metonymy.

A substantial part of "Wall Street" has been destroyed. The records may be there somewhere, but thousands of people who made it work are gone. I wonder if other markets around the world will shut down until the US exchanges can reopen. They probably should. The entire U.S. stock market shut down for months at the beginning of World War I.
