To think the US efforts in the middle east are independent of oil interests is quite naive.

That's not what I said. I said that to label international trade of a commodity raw material between its source of supply and its place of use as something negative is stupid. I suppose the medical technology, computer and communications technology, and other goods (and money) we export (or pay) to OPEC nations is an "addiction" they should learn to do without? They should keep their oil and we should keep our goods and money? Should the US also learn to live without Coffee from Central and South America? Should Microsoft stop exporting software to those addicted Europeans and Asians? Trade between nations serves to distribute resources from their place of supply to their place of need in exchange for some other resource. Oil is no different than pharmaceuticals or computer chips. Be buy the former and sell the latter. Trade between nations also serves to improve the standards of living of the participating nations. That's global economics and it's no sin. Get over it.
