Win, yes, Russia decided the gains were not worth the costs, esp since the USA supplied stinger missiles and that negated close in Russian air support. All the russins could do was high altitude carpet bombing and that was not accurate enought. This coupled with the break down at home that was beginning....they left. Just like USA left Vietnam, not defeated, just wanted to stop the aggravation.

After that the assorted factions were aided or not if they were socialists or not in an effort to make it a capitalist place. Of course it has always been a warlords turf, so that is what happened until the Taleban came along and got lots of people that were fed up with warlords and they acqquiesced with the taleban walk in.

Now the people hate the taleban and thay can be ousted.
It is my understanding that Kabul airport was just bombed
