fin,

Let's say we give up some of our freedoms today to take measures to allegedly prevent something like this from happening again

What rights do immigrants from Muslim countries have? Not accepting a single immigrant from a country where some percentage of population is Muslim would be a first good step, which would not require any loss of freedom.

Or how about a question of whether a person is a muslim, is a part of any muslim group be placed on a questionaire for would be immigrants, the same way as the question if a person is a communist, member of communist party, which was the official policy for decades, and may still be on the books.

It doesn't mean that you stop all threats, but what do you think is better to have in this country, the present number of potential terrorists or present number of potential terrorists + 1?

Joe

RE:"So what are the options? Close the national borders and permanently garrison them? Garrison the state borders? I'm sorry, but I don't want to see panic lead to effective martial law in the U.S. If that happens, then the terrorists have already won. We're a free society. That comes with certain risks and responsibilities. Unfortunately, events like today are one of those risks"

We could start by not letting these middle east countries export their wars to our shores and start looking out for our own damn country. If that takes some drastic measures then so be it.

Jim

fingolfen,

Closing our borders might be a short term solution. I believe that our intelligence community does a fairly good job of protecting the US. We don't hear about their successes, only failures.

Personally, I think we are rather quick to say that Bin Laden is responsible. Just b/c Bin Laden is a terrorist does not necessarily mean that he ordered this attack. Perhaps a more extreme faction of his group?
